Background and Project Vision

After nearly 90 years of use by ULBC, the current boathouse is in need of improvements. The ongoing advancements in technology and sports science research has significantly changed the way in which the boathouse is used – there is now a greater focus on weight training and ergometer training than there previously was.

The club is committed to training out of the boathouse in Chiswick for the rest of the club’s life, building on the history of success and progression achieved to date. Therefore to keep up with the evolving world of rowing and ensure further progression for the club, the boathouse needs to operate at a higher level and provide greater capacity for basic needs such as changing facilities and responding to new training methods.

By allowing the boathouse to be adapted and increasing its facilities, the club will ensure its continued success and maintain its historic boathouse.

The club’s main aims for the project are outlined below:

1. Refurbish the Grade II listed building, preventing the decay of a heritage asset through a sensible design approach respectful of the building’s setting along the River Thames

Re-establish the site as the premier rowing training facility in London

Equip the club with appropriate training facilities

Improve the boathouse’s accessibility, allowing for less able bodied users to use the facilities, and increasing opportunities for outreach programmes

Improve the operation of the site with boat and vehicle movement

Secure the future of the listed boathouse through its sustainable retrofit to minimise energy use and preserve its fabric

Improve security on site
